CANDLER, N.C. (WLOS) — Libraries across the country, including the mountains, are celebrating the right to read this week.
Officials at libraries and bookstores said many books have been challenged or banned for reasons including language, sexuality, violence or religious grounds. In many cases, the bans are often unsuccessful, and the books remain on the shelves.
“Read what you want. It’s all there for you. So, take advantage,” Enka-Candler Branch Library manager Leisa Stamey said.

The American Library Association said people have a right to read whatever they want with the understanding that parents make common sense decisions for their children.
