University of Colorado Boulder Libraries Processing Archivist


The University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) Libraries invites applications from collaborative and innovative candidates for the position of Processing Archivist, a non-tenure-stream faculty position in the University Libraries’ Special Collections, Archives & Preservation Department. The University of Colorado Boulder Archives was established in 1918 and holds internationally renowned manuscript, photograph, records and media collections relating to the history of the University of Colorado Boulder, the state of Colorado, the Rocky Mountain West, and transnational subjects.
The Processing Archivist reports to the Head of Archives and works in a highly-collaborative team environment. The individual is responsible for: establishing priorities for efficiently processing the backlog of legacy collection and new acquisitions; performing arrangement, description, and physical processing of collections; creating of finding aids in ArchivesSpace; assessing preservation and conservation issues; overseeing the management of the Atomic West and the National Snow and Ice Data Center collections; working with the Head of Archives and donors on new acquisitions of archival collections; managing student workers and interns for the Archives Unit; providing primary source instruction; providing regular reference services; and coordinating outreach. This position will cultivate and advocate for an environment of diversity and inclusion based on the position’s responsibilities.

This is a renewable, non-tenure-track faculty position. Successful candidates will be expected to engage in research and professional service activities.

Appointment and Salary:

The successful candidate will be appointed as full-time (12 month) non-tenure stream faculty member. Depending on professional experience, appointment will be at the instructor or senior instructor level. The minimum starting salary is $53,000. Benefits include 22 working days of vacation, ten paid holidays, sick leave, university group health care plans, group life insurance, TIAA administered retirement/annuity, and support for scholarly/professional activities.

ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science with a focus or concentration in archives management; Master’s degree in Archival Studies; or a Master’s degree in Public History with a focus or concentration in archives management;

Minimum of 1 year experience in accessioning, arrangement, processing, description, and preservation of archives, manuscripts, and multi-format collections, including born-digital, audiovisual, and photographic materials;

Ability to cultivate and advocate for an environment of diversity and inclusion;

Demonstrated understanding of and experience with archival theory and practice, national standards, relevant legal and ethical regulations, and best practices that govern the arrangement, description, and use of archival materials, including DACS, MPLP, and EAD;

Demonstrated experience using archival descriptive systems (such as ArchivesSpace, Archivists’ Toolkit, or Archon);

Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging practices for preserving archival materials in all formats;

Demonstrated knowledge of confidentiality, copyright, and other policy, legal, and ethical aspects of managing and providing access to archival materials;

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues and patrons;

Demonstrated experience collaborating on projects in a team environment;

Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; and

Potential for research, scholarly work, and professional service.

Desirable Qualifications:

Evidence of any of the following will enhance a candidacy:

Experience with provenance research;

Experience providing outreach for library or archival collections;

Experience providing reference services to library or archival collections;

Instruction experience;

Experience working with donors and managing various aspects of the acquisition of collections, including appraisal and gift agreements;

Knowledge of emerging technologies for managing archival collections, including digital repositories and digital preservation systems (such as DSpace, Archivematica, or Islandora) and digital exhibit systems (such as Luna or Omeka);

Supervisory experience;

Record of active participation in professional associations relevant to archives; and

Evidence of research or scholarly work relevant to the field of archives management and/or related fields.
